Dear Desert Star Parents, Guardians, and Students,

I am delighted to welcome you to Desert Star Elementary School for the 2019 – 2020 school year! After a long and productive summer, I look forward to seeing all of the faces of our returning Desert Star Cheetahs, as well as welcoming our new Cheetahs as they arrive! There is so much to look forward to at Desert Star in the coming year, and I cannot wait to share these experiences with all of you!

I am absolutely thrilled to introduce our new Assistant Principal, Lisa Fisher, to our Desert Star Family! For our returning Cheetahs, you will recognize Mrs. Fisher, as she served our school as the Systems Instructional Facilitator for the past two years. She has also worked for Alamogordo Public Schools in many different capacities over the past 16 years, including as a Peer Assisted Learning Mentor (similar to an Instructional Specialist) and as both a regular and special education teacher. I look forward to working with Mrs. Fisher to continue to refine and improve the initiatives we have put into place to increase the learning and overall educational experience of all Desert Star students.

At Desert Star Elementary School, we are committed to providing the best possible education for our students. As we prepare students for middle school and beyond, it is critical that our students arrive for school on-time, every day. According to the U.S. Department of Education, Children who are chronically absent in preschool, kindergarten, and first grade are much less likely to read at grade level by the third grade. Students who cannot read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely than proficient readers to drop out of high school.” When a student is tardy, he or she is missing critical learning that is nearly impossible to make up without direct instruction. Therefore, please ensure that our Desert Star Cheetahs are here on time, every day.

As we begin our magical journey into the new school year, I challenge you to become an even bigger part of our Desert Star family! We have many opportunities for our families to volunteer and become active participants in the education of all of our Desert Star students. Whether you volunteer in a classroom, for morning or afternoon car lines, breakfast or lunch duties, or one of our many PTC activities, your support means everything to the success of our students. Together, we can launch our “Desert Stars” into the galaxy and beyond!

Yours in Education,
